Although a mere one percent of the cigar-smoking public in the United States is comprised of women, that figure is rapidly on the rise. Women are no longer concerned about ancient and outdated taboos that are associated with cigar smoking, and they are dropping their more feminine cigarettes and reaching out in record numbers for cigars in public and in private. What’s behind this surge in stogie puffing gals?

Reasons for Increased Women Smoking Cigars

While some women claim that smoking cigars is just another way that they can be perceived as free to do as they please (an offshoot of women’s lib), others appreciate the health benefit of cigar smoking versus cigarette smoking. For those who enjoy nicotine, two cigars will provide a longer nicotine fix than five cigarettes – all without the detrimental health effects associated with inhaling smoke. Some women smoking cigars simply love the flavor or taste of the cigar or its unique aroma, and with the many different flavored cigars on the today’s market, there is something for literally every taste. Others find comfort in the camaraderie that accompanies a good cigar among friends. And some women find the “shock value” that comes along with cigar smoking to be the main reason to fire up their favorite Cuban blend. So in essence, women love to smoke cigars for many of the same reasons that men do!

Celebrity Women Smoking Cigars

The growing popularity of women smoking cigars is perhaps due in small part to the number of female celebrities who have recently come out of the closet and lit up cigars in public. Famous faces that walk the Red Carpet and also enjoy a good blunt include Sharon Stone, Madonna, and Salma Hayek, just to name a few.

So what does this new trend say about the American woman? It says that she is liberated and doesn’t care to go against the grain, and that she has excellent taste! Women smoking cigars are daring, they dance to the beat of their own drum, and they do not limit themselves to doing what is expected of them.

A weather-beaten Eastwood with chiseled jaws readying his gun at the first knock of door, letting in the nasty old crook to his most coveted province! After the fight that followed which did not even need a shot, Eastwood would walk in slow motion, grab a drink and bite off his cigar’s end, ready to light up, still surveying the crook for life – a classical “Western” moment and some part of it livable in real life!

Let’s face it this time – what could be a better way to wind up the delightful day than relax and set ablaze each sip of our favorite drink (single malt scotch is what I like) with a heavenly cigar! Cigars and whiskey are seriously two of the finest things in life and when working in a group, the two can invoke the most enchanting of experiences. It works for me and I see no reason why it would not for you or anyone else!

It has taken some hundreds of judges, several brain storming (rather “tongue storming”) events and tasting sessions (mostly) in Cuba and Scotland to actually cherish the experience. The partnership between the asserters of two of the finest relaxants on the planet, that is, cigars and whiskey, has avowed this delicate combination as one of the finest, that human civilization could ever conceive. My last visit to Paris for celebrating the anniversary of a world renowned lighter brand provided me with yet another reason to glorify the cause, where I had the opportunity to cherish this paradisiacal combination of Havana and Scotland – cigars and single malt. Ever since, I am easily disposed to battle whoever opposes the heavenly combination of cigars with whiskey, reasoning as wastage of taste.

Refinement on earth for me, of course, is now defined by single malt whiskey, illuminated by the glow of the best rolls. Cultivating on my recently refined tastes owing to the newly developed liking (which, in no time, turned into an obsession); I started pairing these two manifestations of refinement in various combinations conceivable. And to the utter dismay of my contesters, I would be glad to gloat that a variety of cigars complement a variety of whiskeys. However, my favorite amongst all remains no more than mild single malt lighted with a medium/full-bodied cigar (preferably, Cuban).

A lighted Cohiba Siglo IV and a glass of Highland Park Single Malt Scotch make a stunning pair and these are the names that reflexively pop out of my mouth when asked to brand my love for the delicate ecstasy. A Partagas D 4 also does go really well with a Lagavulin Single Malt. However, (high time I stopped being nepotistic) there are certain cigars that just do not go with whiskeys – scotch or not..! I do not need to name any because once one cultivates a taste for it, it is quite easy to decipher an odd pair!

If you are a cigarette smoker and looking for a cool way to enhance your masculine appeal then all your searches will come to an end with Cigars. Well, no matter whether you smoke or not, cigar must not be a new name to you. From the early inceptions of tobacco smoking, cigars have been world widely popular among classic smokers. With the advancements of time and technologies, cigars are now available in comprehensive ranges. Here in this article we will discuss about the extensive types of cigars available in the current market.

Cigars are categorized based on different factors, including size, the ways they are prepared, ingredients, power and so on. Among all these parameters, size is the one that is given much preference in terms of making the categorization. Usually a cigar comes with 64th of an inch diameter, but the diameter and length of a cigar often vary. There are some types of cigars like Cigarillo, Lonsdale, Robusto, Corona, Panatela, Torpedo, Toro, Churchill and Perfecto that have much higher diameter than normal sized cigars. Now there are also giant sized cigars available that come with 9-inch of length.

Cigars are available in different colors as well. The colors of the cigars usually depend on the color of the exterior, i.e. the wrapper. Now, in the international market around 100 types of cigars available, and from that large collection you can easily collect the one you desire.

Apart from the size and color aspects, other important points on the basis of which cigars can be categorized are shapes and preparation method. Different cigars come with different shapes and some cigars are hand-made and others built through machinery processes.

So, now you have got an idea about different types of cigars and now you can comfortably make your decision about which cigar brand to choose that will perfectly match with your criteria.

People are irresistibly drawn to their own culminated habits and even thousands of cautions can hardly restrain them from their bad habits. Smoking is such a devastating habit and the online cigar bonanza has ignited it even further. Perhaps the world has been witnessing a peculiar unequal battle between the consciousness and unconsciousness, virtue and evil, spirit and moroseness, morality and immorality. On one hand it’s the unending fight of the auspicious forces against the disastrous smoking and on the other, it’s the monolithic dogmatism of some cigar lovers. The time has not yet come for the final verdict as any drastic change needs sustainable amount of time and even bloodshed can not be ruled out.

If you ask the smoker about the reasons, you will receive very peculiar reasons. It’s the bridge between two unknown individuals, the starter of friendship or the initiator of creativity. Cigars are the best pastime activities as loneliness at times raises boredom and the meanders of smoke help them to reach the Disney lands. Prohibition in smoking dismays the alcohol addicts as they feel that drinking losses its luster without the presence of a cigar. What we can realize that cigars, like most other drugs, can generate a sudden boost by intoxicating the nerves and the effect goes away automatically with the course of time. The problem is that its far reaching tentacles of cigars can bring a formidable devastation in one’s life and reduce the life span drastically. The cigars not only affect the smoker, but it builds up a huge number of passive smokers and the entire vicinity becomes polluted.

Cigars have been forbidden in many places by stipulations formed at various governmental and social levels, but rights to freedom can’t annihilate the smoking by force. People can smoke at their own drawing room in front of the television or in their own bedroom, even ignoring the alarms of spouse.

When the people are asked to quit smoking, they start feeling alien and restless without having a puff at the schedule time. There are people, who attempts to bid adieu to their dangerous habit, but even their valiant efforts fail to cut the ice, at times. It’s really difficult to show resilience to the prolonged habit, but it is the human being, who can even exhibit the guts of mountaineering in Himalayas. We feel, a continuous effort with an optimal support from the dear and near once can help them to get rid of their inculcated habits. Some people believe in jolts, who try to leave the cigar by throwing the packet to the dustbin and there are some, who prefer to reduce cigars through a planned approach before they arrive at their objective of non-smoking. In either case, one has to be courageous enough to overcome the inner battle, as every smoker starts smoking after his tacit approval only.

Every new thing in the world has got some potentially negative effects, against which the human resilience pops up automatically. If one needs to put an end to his Cigar sojourn, he may need a fierce thunder to stir himself from inside.

Cigar Humidors.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be a cigar humidors expert to find a good quality cigar humidor that fits your budget these days.  But before you go out and buy one or two cigar humidors, try and get a good idea in your mind of what you would like to have in your cigar humidor.

As you know or may not know, cigars consume oxygen and emit gases into the air.  It is therefore extremely important that cigar humidors are regularly aerated in order to provide the cigars inside with fresh air.  Cigar humidors should close really tightly so that a constant level of internal humidity can be secured and more importantly maintained.

Humidity

The ideal humidity you should aim for in your cigar humidor is around 69 – 71% of the outside relative humidity.  Although the humidity can go higher or lower depending on the your preferences but take my advice, the cigar humidors humidity should never go higher than 75% due to the possibility of the hatching of tobacco beetles.

Another tip is to keep your cigar humidor with a well stocked compliment of your favourite cigars.  The reason being is that the more empty space there is in the humidor, the more readily the humidity level of the cigar humidor box will drop.

All cigar humidors contain a humidifying system which keeps the air moist, which in turn keeps your prize cigars moist too.

Most humidifying elements are sponge like, passively releasing stored humidity through diffusion and evaporation.  Electronic humidifiers are also available these days, relying on electronics to measure and regulate the relative humidity.

To discourage the eggs of the tobacco beetle from hatching, the cigar humidors temperature should be kept below 25°C/75°F, as well as below 75% relative humidity.

Good luck with your search in finding some perfect Cigar Humidors.  In fact to aid your search I can recommend this site:  Cigar Humidors

This site has great prices and a fine selection of Cigar Humidors!

Those who know their cigars well also, by that same token, know Brazil-albeit as a source of great tobacco rather than as a top cigar-producing nation. Brazilian tobacco, mainly produced in the country’s temperate northeastern and southern regions, turns up in such world-class cigars as Carlos Torano’s Toro, but the country’s cigar producers themselves haven’t always gotten the same respect. But that may be about to change. After all, Brazilian cigars-including the Angelina, Dannemann and Dannemann, Le Cigar, Don Pepe, Dom Porfirio, and Dona Flor (named for Jorge Amado’s classic novel Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands)-have already convinced many US cigar aficionados that this country’s cigars are as good as its tobacco.

But Brazil’s own rich history-and its sure-to-be-turbulent future-make it an important place for cigar smokers to understand. How has one of the world’s important tobacco-producing nations come to be the home of one of the strongest anti-smoking movements in the Western Hemisphere? And will these two opposing tendencies continue, uneasily, to coexist? Only a prophet could say-but perhaps a brief backgrounder on this Latin American nation can provide some helpful context.

The first thing to know about Brazil is that it’s big-in resources, landmass, and people. It’s the fifth-largest country in the world, and the fifth most populous. Among the world’s pro forma democracies, it ranks fourth in population size, and it controls a powerful economy, ranking ninth in the world in purchasing power. It’s a diverse country, too, with one hundred-eighty-eight living languages, and, interestingly enough, the world’s largest confirmed reserve of uncontacted peoples-small pre-industrial tribes that, for all practical purposes, have stayed sealed off from the rest of the world. In this single nation, then, an ultramodern economy exists side-by-side with some of the world’s last refuges of pre-industrial life, and gleaming cities (Sao Paulo and Brasilia) share the same boundary with huge swaths of rainforest.

What kind of culture does such a diverse country produce? Well-a similar situation produced artistic riches for the United States, and things are hardly any different for Brazil. Consider tropicalismo, one of the country’s major artistic exports. This musical movement, spearheaded by the legendary band Os Mutantes and the singer-songwriters Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and manic genius Tom Ze among others, fuses all the diverse musics of this country (along with a hefty dose of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground and jazz) to create some of the best-regarded music of the 1970s. Whatever political and logistical headaches it may pose, such bursting-at-the-seams diversity is good fortune for any artist lucky enough to benefit from it.

Like many Latin American countries (and like the US), Brazil was originally the colony of an ambitious European nation-in this case, Portugal. Led by its Portuguese-born regent, Pedro I, the country won its independence in 1822. What followed was a long power struggle between Pedro (eventually replaced by his son Pedro II), various rebelling factions of the population, and the country’s economically dominant classes, who found Pedro variously useful and irksome, depending on the situation. Following the deposition of Pedro II in 1889, the country became a republic; during the twentieth century, though, Brazil fell frequently to military coups, some of them (most infamously in 1964) made possible by covert US assistance. Its current relative freedom has lasted only since 1985.

Made up of twenty-six states and a federal district (think Washington, D.C.), the country’s exports include (among others) coffee, iron ore, ethanol, textiles, shoes, and cars. With a major modernizing initiative underway-in 2007, the country’s government, under President Luis Ignacio DaSilva, dedicated three hundred billion dollars to renovating power plants, roads and ports-Brazil clearly intends to keep those exports booming. Including tobacco? Well-that’s dicier. Brazil is incredibly rich in natural resources, but that rainforest shrinks every day. The resulting controversy raises issues for tobacco farmers: only a sustainable ecology will ensure that Brazil continues to yield those fine tobacco crops, and yet some sustainability measures may threaten farmers’ short-term profits (small farmers, many of them, and small profits). It’s a difficult balance.

More threatening, perhaps, for those of us who value Brazil’s contribution to cigar culture, is the strength of its anti-smoking movement. The country has some of the toughest anti-smoking laws in the world, funnels large amounts of money into anti-tobacco campaigns, and forbids tobacco-products advertising in any form. Still, the total number of smokers grew slightly during the past decade. Some business experts forecast that the country’s tobacco industry will have to get used to a shrinking overall population of smokers, and concentrate instead on increasing brand value, making better and safer products. Cigars, designed to be used in moderation and savored, may well flourish in this environment. At any rate, the reported use of genetically-modified tobacco crops in the country’s southern region suggests that tobacco-related controversies will continue in Brazil.

I have always been of the opinion that you shouldn’t trust anyone who doesn’t have at least one known vice, be it swearing, drinking, smoking, or whatever.  If they appear to be overly virtuous, then they are probably hiding something much more malicious. I remember one fellow from Toledo who went to great lengths to project a Lilly-white image.  He regularly attended church, could quote chapter and verse from the Bible, and condemned anyone for any form of indiscretion.  You would have believed such a person would be trustworthy, honest and forthright.  Frankly, I found him to be one of the most ruthless and unscrupulous businessmen I ever had the displeasure to meet, not to mention an extreme bore.  I have challenged this rule about vice over the years and found it to hold true time and again.

As for me, my passion has always been cigars, something I learned to smoke when I was thirteen years old behind my friend’s house in Chicago (a White Owl Classic if memory serves me correctly).  I am not advocating smoking or trying to encourage others to imbibe, just to describe someone’s choice in life.  I do not promote or advocate smoking cigars, but I have found it to be a small personal pleasure.  I guess I am at the stage where I am no longer impressed by mansions, fast sports cars, boats, or any other “boys toys” to find happiness.  To me it’s the little things that makes life pleasurable, such as a fine woman, good company and conversation, perhaps a drink, and a really good cigar.

I never acquired a taste for cigarettes or chewing tobacco and found them to be simply a waste of time (and money), but that’s me.  Occasionally I’ll pick up a pipe, but frankly, I get more enjoyment out of a cigar.  In addition to recreation, I enjoy smoking a cigar while I’m writing as it allows me to pause and concentrate on the subject at hand.  It also helps me pass the time when performing the tedium of mowing my lawn.

Cigars come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors and tastes and one of the biggest misconceptions I would like to clear up is there is no such thing as a bad one, unless of course it has dried out, been soiled, or somehow been damaged.  Actually, it’s a matter of matching the right person to the right cigar.  There are some cigars I simply wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole, such as a green-leafed natural, something soaked in liquor, or twisted to look like a rope.  I have enjoyed tobacco from Cuba, the Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Philippines, and many other locations.  My tastes have evolved over the years whereby I prefer a large cigar with a generous ring size and wrapped in a dark Maduro leaf.  But again, that’s me.  Cigars are a personal thing.  What one smoker may enjoy, another may despise.  That’s why it is a matter of trying different cigars until you find what you like.  Novice cigar aficionados should seek the expertise of a mentor to provide the proper tutelage.  The worst thing you can do is try to smoke a type of cigar to impress someone else, not yourself.  Further, a cigar should not be forced on you as it is a conscious decision you must personally make.

I cannot possibly teach you everything you need to know about selecting a cigar herein, there are simply too many variables involved, everything from its origin and manufacturer, to the wrapper, the filler, or even how it should be cut and lit.  Outsiders may be surprised to learn the best cigar wrappers do not come from the Caribbean, but rather Connecticut, right here in the good old U.S.A.  There is evidently something in the Connecticut soil conducive for growing the right leaves for wrapping a cigar.  As Stengel would have said, “Who da thunk it.”

I was always envious of Winston Churchill, the famous Prime Minister of England, who was an iconic figure for the cigar.  I have read books on Churchill and had the pleasure of visiting his Chartwell home in England.  Interestingly, when Churchill was alive there was always at least 10,000 cigars in his home.  It seems he received truckloads of them from various heads of state, grateful constituents, and various manufacturers who hoped he would endorse their product.  Imagine what a learning experience it would have been to sample the various cigars under his roof.

Yes, I have had my fair share of detractors over the years condemn me for my passion, and I make an effort not to let it interfere with others, but the taunting by the anti-smoking establishment gets rather tiresome.  They just do not understand the pleasure of a good cigar.  A few years ago when I was still coaching and umpiring in Little League, I went down to the local ball fields one night to see a friend’s son play. I was comfortably sitting away from others in the outfield and had just lit a cigar when another coach spotted me and, lacking an umpire for his game, begged me to call the game for him.  I reluctantly accepted and entered the field with my cigar in tow.  Some of the parents jeered me for the cigar but I assured them not to worry and I put it out and stuck it in the backstop fence so I could smoke it later.  The game went on for several innings.  When it was over, I returned to retrieve the cigar and found it had fallen out of the fence and on to the red clay of the field, much to the amusement of the parents who chided me earlier.  Unfazed, I simply rubbed the red clay off and re-lit it, much to the amazement of the parents.  “Sorry,” I said, “but there is nothing like a good cigar.”

It’s personal.

P.S. – The term “Stogie” comes from Conestoga, a village of southeast Pennsylvania which, in its heyday, manufactured cigars.

To the hard core cigar smoker, cigars are not meant to be used as laughing matter, unless the cigar smoker happens to be a comedian. Comedians use tobacco cigars as props, which sometimes serve as a signature feature of a stand-up comedy routine. To some comedians, cigars and cigarettes are as essential as the microphone. We shall take a look at the cigar smoking comedians of the past as well as present. Groucho Marx is perhaps not only the most well-known cigar smoking comedian, but one of the most famous cigar smokers of all the eras. Nobody would have seen him in public without his trusty cigar. Truly, Marx is considered one of the pioneers in the cigar smoking world. Nowadays, comedians anywhere in the world can mimic his routine just by puffing on a tobacco cigar.

George Burns preferred cigars over most of the other things in his life. George Burns was very rarely seen on stages without a cigarette or a cigar. Starting his career using cigars as props, he eventually became one and the same with cigars; the two had become almost inseparable. When he died, he was buried wearing a suit, with three cigars in the jacket pocket. Another celebrity Bill Cosby never smoked cigars in public or used cigars as props as frequently as other famous and celebrated comedians did. He used to be an avid cigar smoker; it was a habit he had since given up. In fact it was a hobby he started in order to copy the antics of Groucho Marx, one of his idols. And many of us did believe that Bill Cosby only smoked good pudding pops. Milton Berle went on to become television’s first major star, and he took care to maintain a magnetic charisma at all times.

During the golden period of television, he came to be known as ‘Uncle Miltie’, a nickname that can be attributed to the endearment American people felt towards him. Though he was not a drinker, he used to be an avid cigar smoker as well as an avid gambler. He would spend days smoking cigars at the horse race venues. Ernest Kovacs was a pioneer of television ad-lib routines and off-the-wall antics. Actually, he was the person who helped turn comedy into the form we see today. The television series such as ‘Laugh-in’ was modelled after his creative talent and genius. So talented was he that he virtually knocked down the walls or barriers between audience and performer; in fact, Kovac was nothing short of innovative.

While he appeared to be a spokesman for Master cigars, he only lit up other cigars off camera. Nonetheless, the commercial or ad that features him smoking a particular cigar is still regarded as one of the funniest of all time. From the ancient days of silent movies to the present day stage acts, if there is one single piece of luxury custom made for comedic performers, it is the tobacco cigars. This, of course, is not to say that only these people should smoke cigars.

The growth trend in cigar lounges is not that new actually. Cigar smoking started gaining popularity in the early 90′s and have become increasingly popular, surprisingly, among all social classes, though historically cigars were associated with the rich and the famous.  Ever noticed that there are ten times as many “No Smoking” boards today than there were only 10 years ago? Ever noticed fewer movies with rich people with pipes held tigtly near the corner of their mouths? Those aren’t just random observations, they are real.

Fewer people smoke in public these days and fewer do it compulsively. But that doesn’t mean people don’t enjoy a good smoke occasionally. Given all that, it might sound like a paradox, but occasional cigar smoking is actually on a major upswing. As more restaurants and bars are required to follow no smoking laws and cigars weren’t allowed in most of them, anyway, it appears that cigar lounges are the new IN thing in America.  Cigar lounges have popped up for those that are looking for a place to smoke cigars and socialize. Sociable hookah smoking has also been gaining in popularity rapidly in most cigar lounges.

The number one reason that patrons provide for why they frequent their cigar lounges is the ambience. I can relate to that. If you think about it, cigar lounges offer an air of relaxation and that’s unlike any other. It’s like a bar, but it’s got this exotic feel to it that bars and pubs don’t have. It truly transcends you to a different world in a sense in a positive way, and that’s what patrons are after. In recent times, it isn’t unusual to see women sampling the finest cigars that are offered in cigar lounges.

Cigar lounges range in styles from the ritzy and chic to the historic and intimate, but they  typically have a room-sized humidor where the finest cigars are kept fresh and can be purchased and stored for regulars. In fact, there are some cigar lounges that feature a “members only” room that is decorated in the finest style for their most frequent customers that might pay a fee, to enjoy the more private area. Mood and décor can vary greatly, but the upscale feeling of most cigar lounges is dictated by the styles of music, art and décor, along with the clientele that frequent the lounge.

So what are cigar lounges up to these days? Busy adding hundreds of different kinds of cigars for their customers to sample. The number of brands has grown exponentially over the last two decades as well. Cigar aficionados often have their favorite brand. Some get adventurous and try a different brand of cigar every time they visit their favorite cigar lounges to develop a taste for fine cigars. Scotch and whiskey go well with the fine ambience and most lounges try very hard to get a liquor license to be able to serve these. But don’t go in expecting to find your favority alcoholic brand at any cigar lounge. Many just serve exotic coffees because of liquor law restrictions that might be tied to smoking ordinances. Combining alcohol and cigars creates a different effect that patrons often enjoy. There have been conflicting research on the effect of this. Like most things in life, in moderation, cigars and alcohol create a great pair. Another trend on the rise is multi-user hookahs – the perfect group or party piece.
