Why was there foamy bubbles from your sponge? because you used it in the kitchen before? Im not a fan of this video, though some of it is correct. I would not advise this method nor a glass top to any first time humidor buyer.
Can i use the XiKaR PG solution to do this
@kalob35 Absolutely not. Drinking water (tap water), has minerals that will collect on your humidifier, and should really not be used on the cedar walls. A gallon of distilled H2O is less than a $ at most markets. Don’t take chances.
can you use regular drinking water?

@toasterboyohfour try salt testing your hygrometer. It could very well be 20% off or more so that could be your issue.
@dcfc182 Thanks for the comment. I believe that the distilled drinking water also has minerals in it, whereas the steam distilled water used for irons, etc. does not.

@Josh4145 @Josh4145 Hi. I’ve done this method a number of times and it’s worked like a charm. It’s one of the reasons I did the video. The empirical evidence was clear. It could be the thickness of the walls. Maybe they need more time. Also, the humidifier you’re using is key. It should be large enough to do the job and of good quality, preferably crystals, but I’ve had good success with traditional green foam. I think the safest way to go is let the box sit for 5 days.

yah i wish in the vid he had mentioned the at least 85% thing, i got up to 81% and tonight i got my stogies, i took the sponge out and it tanked. Went to 50%, so i put it back in and let it sit a bit with the cigars in there, and it shot up to 81% again, so i removed it and it tanked but only to 58% this time and balanced. still too low tho, i need at least 65%, so what do i do be it 27 smokes are in there at 58 right now….do i need to put the sponge in for a whole nother day?
So i should wait till the humido is up to 85%? if its more thats ok? And say its up to 85 or so % and i put 27 cigars in there, is that ok to do cause it will balance to 70? I appreciate your time in replying if u do. So far my humidor is at 68 degrees and 72% humidity and its on the 3rd day now with one sponge in, i just put another in with 27 Romeo Y Juliettas coming tomorrow, just wondering if ill be alright for tomorrow.
I followed these steps last night and started seeing a change in the hygrometer % right away. Except for when I woke up, it was still in the same spot (just over 50%). Think I should soak the sponge in distilled water again or even soak the humidifier again? Not sure why it wont go past 50%. I know it hasnt even been one day so maybe I just need to have more patience with it.

Why do you use distilled water?
I’m expecting a humidor and some cigars in the mail today or tomorrow. Being a newbie, however, I forgot to order a hygrometer and just ordered one a few minutes ago (it should come within 3-5 business days). Any suggestions on what I should do when the humidor and cigars come soon?
@loopba That’s what I figured. No problemo. A lot of cigar smokers take their hygrometers at “face value” so to speak.

@FamousSmokeShop Thanks, I checked the analog vs my calibrated digital and its off by 22%!! Wow…So it was 77%. I opened it up a bit and removed the sponge so should be at 70% soon. Thanks for the info.
@loopba Sounds like you didnt let it go long enough. Should be at leat 85% before removing the sponge. Also, be sure your hygro is properly calibrated. Remember, the longer you leave in the sponge, the more H2O is absorbed, which will help in the long run.

I followed this w/o any wiping and with two sponges. My humidity was 75% after two days. Yesterday I opened it to put in about 25 cigars and now the humidity wont go over 55%. I put in a hot, fresh sponge today…hopefully that take care of it. Any suggestions on what else to do?

Thank you good sir, I really appreciate it alot and I’ll definitely check that out, but either way it’ll take a few days to season the 120ct humidor and will try and get some of the seasoning packs for my 50ct desktop humidor, which I still haven’t put to goot use yet.
It’s safe to say that I will have alot of cigars to order in the next few months and I certainly ain’t gonna be complaining lol
